Stereotypes. Coded language. Unconscious bias.
This course aims to encourage students to think critically and source news and information consciously in the age of algorithms, social media and political turmoil. The media affect the way we see one another across social boundaries established by such characteristics as race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. How do the perspectives formed by the media we consume ultimately affect our decisions on public policy, political participation, equal rights and criminal justice?
Through discussion of principles of media professionalism and ethics, we’ll look at a variety of ‘hot topics’ in today’s headlines and aim to compare how different news outlets frame the narrative in a variety of different ways and how traditionally marginalised groups are represented.
